Today I sat in on Dr. Ciapetta's reading class. This is the class I'll be teaching next week so this was a helpful introduction for me into the exact level of reading material best suited for the class. First, the class had 10 minutes to read an article independently. During this time, Dr. Ciapetta explained to me that they did pre-reading questions in the previous class period. After having read the article, they had three minutes to summarize it with a partner. The class then had a group discussion about the reading and what students noticed. She told students that if they didn't understand much, then they can just talk about what they did understand. Students were then instructed to read it again and take notes. They compared their notes to their partner's notes in the last few minutes of class. This period mostly consisted of independent work, giving me a good idea of the culture of teacher-student involvement.
